This is an Adobe Acrobat book (free readers for various digital platforms available from Adobe.com) about the known police forces in England and Wales since the eighteenth century. The police forces of the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man are also included. Revisions and additions have been added every year since first publication in 2012. In 2024, for example, 112 new insignia pictures were added - plus a host of other additions (see 'PH - 2024 Additions' on the menu at right top of this page).
This book supersedes the older ‘Police Reference: England and Wales (plus the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man)' (ISBN 978-0-9858978-0-2) which came out in yearly editions between 2012 and 2017.
The cheaper version (previously only sold on eBay) where all pictures were at a reduced resolution. has been discontinued due to lack of interest.
Different sections detail county, town, city, borough and Non-Home Office (airport, canal, defence, dock, nuclear parks, railways, tunnel, university and others) police forces. Also included are the old Police Office constables (Bow Street, Thames River and the other Greater London ones).
The origins of place names, local coats of arms (and/or seals), historical officer numbers, dates and known chief officers are detailed as far as possible.
A comprehensive Glossary (see below for list of topics, among many topics, describes other police related agencies or entities. There is also a bibliography or references section. Special topics include Crown Styles, Generic Badges, Helmets, Police Women, the Relative Value of Money, Special Constabulary, Uniform Development and Warrant Cards.
There are 3,327 pages (including 34 intentionally blank pages for future additions) plus the cover page, over 8,400 pictures and 600,000+ words.
Thousands of links (cross references; also known as hyperlinks) and 1,200 bookmarks help tie it all together and make navigating around this massive work very easy. In addition, the whole text is fully searchable.
